Understanding stop/start automobile-engine design, Part 1: The idea

Over time, this can add up to a tremendous amount of fuel—and money—savings. While each car manufacturer has their own proprietary system, they all work very similarly. When you apply the brakes, and your car comes to a complete stop, the ECU cuts both fuel and spark, thereby instantly shutting the engine down. When you take your foot off of the brake, the computer re-engages the fuel and spark, and your car starts right back up.

How does start/stop work?

Published on April 6, in Fuel by Stefano Peduzzi 7 minute read. As every fleet manager knows, a reduction in idling time is both beneficial and cost effective. It provides savings in the form of lower fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs, thus extending vehicle life and a reduction in emissions. An idling engine consumes fuel only to keep itself and the vehicles accessories running — fuel economy is at zero miles per gallon!

Yeah, well, he was as wrong about that as he was about Plymouth. Yes, a cold engine runs rich, consuming more fuel than normal. For an engine already at optimum temperature, though, stopping and starting does not use an excessive amount of fuel. This is why manufacturers have introduced systems that automatically limit idling in a motionless vehicle. When the car comes to a stop, the engine computer cuts spark and fuel.

As newer cars enter the market, start-stop technology is becoming a popular standard feature in petrol, diesel, and hybrid fuel types. So, how does it work, how can you tell that your car has this feature, and why are manufacturers opting to include it in their cars? In hybrid fuel-type cars, the same system might also shut down the combustion engine when the car cruises at low throttle loads, when descending a hill, and when decelerating from higher speeds. The engine will start back up again when the clutch is pressed or the brakes are released, but it can also start up when the driver is ready to move or accelerate again.
